The Chincoteague Police
Department is the primary law enforcement agency charged
with protecting the nearly 4,000 yearly residents and over
1.4 million yearly visitors of Chincoteague Island. The
department consist of eleven sworn officers who are
responsible for enforcing criminal and traffic laws of the
Commonwealth of Virginia and the ordinances of the Town of
Chincoteague. In addition, officers perform hundreds of
accident investigations annually and assist with traffic
control at busy intersections during peak summer months.
The officers of the Chincoteague Police Department remain
quite busy even during the winter months. In 1999, the
officers combined for over 400 criminal and traffic arrests
and answered over 2,000 calls for service. Training is very
important to the officers of the Chincoteague Police
Department, which is reflected by its impressive staff of
instructors. Chincoteague Police Department is proud to have
on staff a total of four Department of Criminal Justice
Services General Instructors, including a RADAR Instructor
and a Firearms Instructor. The department is proud to be a
member of the Hampton Roads Regional Academy of Criminal
Justice in Newport News.
The Chincoteague Police Department is dedicated to providing
